176.JUDGEMENT

Lets talk about what Jesus has to say about “judgement”.

Everyday I am confronted by countless Christians who tell me that “I should not judge”.

But today I ask the question…….”what is judgement?”

It is the ability to make a decision, or form an opinion objectively, authoritatively, and wisely, especially in matters affecting action.

Can you really be a follower of Christ without exercising judgement?

The most popular argument that Christians use is a statement that Jesus made:

Matt 7:1-5

1 "JUDGE NOT, THAT YOU BE NOT JUDGED.

2 FOR WITH THE JUDGEMENT YOU PRONOUNCE YOU WILL BE JUDGED, AND THE MEASURE YOU GIVE WILL BE THE MEASURE YOU GET.

3 Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?

4 Or how can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' when there is the log in your own eye?

5 YOU HYPOCRITE, FIRST TAKE THE LOG OUT OF YOUR OWN EYE, AND THEN YOU WILL SEE CLEARLY TO TAKE THE SPECK OUT OF YOUR BROTHER’S EYE.

It is important to emphasise an important point from the onset.

Jesus never said that we “should not judge”.

He gave a warning…… that the same way you judge others……is the same way that you will be judged.

So it is important for you to be aware of what it is that you are judging.

We cannot look at things that Jesus says in isolation……we need to compare it with everything that he says in order to get a full understanding of what he means.

Jesus says:

Luke 12:54-57

54 And He was also saying to the multitudes, "When you see a cloud rising in the west, immediately you say, 'A shower is coming,' and so it turns out.

55 "And when you see a south wind blowing, you say, 'It will be a hot day,' and it turns out {that way.}

56 "You hypocrites! You know how to analyze the appearance of the earth and the sky, but why do you not analyze this present time?

57 "AND WHY DO YOU NOT EVEN ON YOUR OWN INITIATIVE JUDGE WHAT IS RIGHT?

Here there appears to be some sort of contradiction……

On the one hand we are told not to judge……. But here we are told to use our initiative to judge what is right.

So what exactly is the opinion of Jesus in relation to judgement?

Should we judge…….or shouldn’t we?

From having an understanding of what a judgement is…….i will emphasize that is imperative that we make judgements…..on a daily basis.

But the question then comes…..how do we make these judgements?

Jesus says:

John 7:24

24 "DO NOT JUDGE ACCORDING TO APPEARANCE, BUT JUDGE WITH RIGHTEOUS JUDGEMENT."

So here we have a distinction.

There is a judgement according to appearance.

And there is a judgement according to righteousness.

On this basis let me throw in a couple of examples.

If you look at a man…… and based on the fact that he is a smoker….. you conclude that he does not know God……..that is a judgement based on appearance.

If you see a man……stealing something from a womans purse…..and you say he is a thief based on his actions……that is a judgement according to righteousness.

It is very important that we understand the difference.

Let me throw in something else.

There is a difference between judgement and condemnation.

You cannot conclude that a prostitute is going to hell.......because you have no idea if she will change her ways somewhere down the line.

You can definitely say that "if the person continues" in her ways she will end up in hell.

But is not possible to determine anything yourself because you have no idea what the persons relationship with God will be like in the future.

When you condemn someone…… you conclude that the person is “incurable”.

That is definitely something that we should avoid.

All judgements need to be based on one thing only ……. The word of God.

Needless to say…..the word of God is what proceeded from the mouth of Christ.

Jesus says:

John 5:30

30 "I can do nothing on My own initiative. AS I HEAR, I JUDGE; AND MY JUDGEMENT IS JUST, BECAUSE I DO NOT SEEK MY OWN WILL, BUT THE WILL OF HIM WHO SENT ME.

Here another distinction is thrown in.

There is a judgement according to “your will”.

And there is a judgement according to the “will of God”

You can judge a man on the basis of the fact that he is Asian……. But that would be a judgement according to “your will”…. And not the will of God….. because God makes no distinction in race.

The foundation of Judgement for a follower of God……needs to be based on one thing only……”love”…..

When a man does something that is outside of love…….and you express disapproval of it…… you are justified….because it is not based on your will ….. but it is based on the will of God.

Jesus says:

John 8:15-16

15 "YOU PEOPLE JUDGE ACCORDING TO THE FLESH; I AM NOT JUDGING ANYONE.

16 "BUT EVEN IF I DO JUDGE, MY JUDGEMENT IS TRUE; FOR I AM NOT ALONE IN IT, BUT I AND HE WHO SENT ME.

You cannot judge people based on how they look.

You cannot judge people based on your own prejudices.

We do this all the time.

We say things like….”I hate homosexuals……but im not judging them”.

That is probably one of the most ridiculous statements ive heard…..because the statement in itself….. “is a judgement”.

By saying “I am not judging you” at the end of a sentence does not mean you are not judging the person.

And it becomes important that we actually realize this because a lot of the time we are just deceiving ourselves.

Jesus says:

John 12:46-50

46 "I have come {as} light into the world, that everyone who believes in Me may not remain in darkness.

47 "And if anyone hears My sayings, and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world.

48 "He who rejects Me, and does not receive My sayings, has one who judges him; THE WORD I SPOKE IS WHAT WILL JUDGE HIM AT THE LAST DAY.

49 "For I did not speak on My own initiative, but the Father Himself who sent Me has given Me commandment, what to say, and what to speak.

50 "And I know that His commandment is eternal life; therefore the things I speak, I speak just as the Father has told Me."

Indeed Jesus did not come to “judge the world”.

But being in the world…..means that certain judgements will be made.

These judgements are not based on you….. they are based on the words of Christ, which God sent him to say.

Luke 7:40-43

40 And Jesus answered him, "Simon, I have something to say to you." And he replied, "Say it, Teacher."

41 "A moneylender had two debtors: one owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty.

42 "When they were unable to repay, he graciously forgave them both. So which of them will love him more?"

43 Simon answered and said, "I suppose the one whom he forgave more." And He said to him, "YOU HAVE JUDGED CORRECTLY."

It is very important for you to judge.

But dont judge based on appearances……”judge based on righteousness.”

Matthew 7:16

Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?

1 Samuel 24:13 As the old saying goes, 'From evildoers come evil deeds,' so my hand will not touch you.

Proverbs 20:11 Even a child is known by his actions, by whether his conduct is pure and right.
Matthew 7:20 Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.
Matthew 12:33 "Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit.
Luke 6:43 "No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit.
Luke 6:44 Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers.
Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
James 2:18 But someone will say, "You have faith; I have deeds." Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do.
James 3:12 My brothers, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.

May God always guild you with the holy spirit in all!
