(NaturalNews) Smoking is directly correlated with a lower IQ, according to a study conducted by researchers from Tel Aviv University in Israel and published in the journalAddiction.
Researchers tested the IQs of more than 20,000 healthy men between the ages of 18 and 21 who were either serving in the Israeli military or who had recently completed their service. Twenty-eight percent of the men in the sample smoked, while 3 percent were former smokers and 68 percent had never smoked.
The average IQ of thesmokerswas 94, compared with 101 among the non-smokers. Men who smoked more than a pack of cigarettes a day had an averageIQof 90. Although a normal IQ falls between 84 and 116, the difference observed in the study is still considered significant.
In twin pairs where one brother smoked and the other did not, thesmokerconsistently tested at a lower IQ.
The study could not prove whethersmokingcaused a lower IQ or having a lower IQ predisposed people to smoke, but the researchers did rule out the possibility that low socioeconomic status produces both smoking and a lower IQ.
"In thehealthprofession, we've generally thought that smokers are most likely the kind of people to have grown up in difficult neighborhoods, or who've been given less education at good schools," said researcher Mark Weiser, also of Tel Hashomer Hospital. "But because our study included subjects with diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, we've been able to rule out socioeconomics as a major factor."
Weiser noted that people with lower IQs are also more likely to suffer from other forms of drugaddictionand to have health and weight problems.
"People on the lower end of the average IQ tend to display poorer overall decision-making skills when it comes to their health," he said.
"Our study may help parents and health professionals help at-risk young people make better choices."

Smoking Makes You.... by Kate Melville
Smoking in later life seems to be linked to intellectual impairment over the age of 65, suggests research in the Journal of Neurology Neurosurgery and Psychiatry. Some previous studies have suggested that smoking may protect against of Alzheimer's disease and dementia, both of which are associated with ageing.
In a community survey of an area of North London, the research team from the Institute of Psychiatry, London, studied over 650 people aged 65 and over. Smoking and drinking habits were recorded at the beginning of the study. Their intellectual powers were also assessed. After excluding those who already had evidence of intellectual impairment, everyone else was followed up a year later to see if there was any evidence of a decline in intellect. The test used was similar to those used to screen for dementia and Alzheimer's disease.
Of the 417 people who could be retested at the end of the 12 month period, one in 16 had suffered significant intellectual decline. After adjusting for factors known to affect brain function in older people-depression, general health, alcohol use, and educational levels-the researchers found that smokers were up to four times more likely to have evidence of significant intellectual decline than either non-smokers or former smokers. Moderate drinkers before the age of 65 were marginally less likely to experience a decline in mental powers than either heavy, or non-, drinkers.
Smoking contributes to vascular disease and atherosclerosis, conditions which narrow and harden the arteries and impair blood supply to all parts of the body, including the brain, say the authors. They conclude that the lower risk among ex-smokers suggests that right through to older age, people should be actively encouraged to stop smoking to stave off mental decline.
Here are some more of the side Effects of Smoking Cigarettes
By Sarah O'Hara, eHow Contributor
According to Drugs.com, smoking cigarettes is the number one preventable cause of illness and death in the United States. More than one million Americans start smoking cigarettes every year, endangering their lives and those around them. Cigarette smoke has been linked to several life-threatening side effects and health risks, the most common being cancer.
-
-
The most common side effect of smoking cigarettes is cancer. While tobacco increases a person's risk of developing various types of cancers, the most common is lung cancer. Cigarette smoke also significantly increases a person's risk of developing cancer of the mouth, lips, throat or voice box.
According to Drugs.com, cigarette smokers are also at an increased risk of developing cancer in the stomach, kidney, esophagus, pancreas, cervix and bladder.
-
People who smoke cigarettes are also at a grave risk of heart attack and stroke. The carbon monoxide that lives in cigarette smoke has been associated with hardening of arteries, which can lead to stroke caused by blood clots in the brain.
Nicotine in cigarettes also causes the arteries in the legs and arms to tighten, which increases a risk of blood clots and damaged arteries surrounding the heart.
-
Lung disease is one of the most serious side effects of smoking cigarettes. The chemicals in smoke can damage the cilia, or the little hairs that protect the lungs from dirt and other waste. Over time, dirt will begin to collect on the lungs, leading to lung disease.
-
Another side effect of cigarette smoke is chronic bronchitis. Chronic bronchitis is a chronic inflammatory condition in the lungs characterized by excessive coughing and difficulty breathing. The severity of the condition depends on how long (and how much) a person has been smoking.
-
The long-term lung disease emphysema is also associated with smoking. The first sign of emphysema is shortness of breath during exercise or other exerting activities. Over time, however, as the condition worsens, the patient may even start to experience shortness of breath while at rest. In the later stages, patients will also experience symptoms such as uncontrollable coughing, excess mucus production, a blue tint in the eyes and wheezing.
-
In addition to the life-threatening conditions mentioned, other side effects of smoking cigarettes include:
• Yellowing of the teeth • Development of wrinkles at an early age • Higher risk of bone fractures in the wrist, hip or spine • Difficulty sleeping • Soar throat • Bad smell in clothes, skin and hair • Bad breath
