Hitler took poison and simultaneously shot himself through the mouth at the Berlin bunker, as the Red Army was closing in. His body and that of his wife were immediately placed in a ditch, soaked in gasoline and burnt, then buried.
Soon after, the Soviets found the burnt bodies and took them in secret to Moscow where autopsies were performed and the bodies buried. Stalin denied finding the remains because, for political reasons, he wanted the world to believe that Hitler might one day return.
The bodies were dug up and buried a few times over the years and eventually the bones were crushed and disposed of.
However, Hitlers cranium and some teeth have been preserved along with bloodstained sections of the couch he used. These have been positively identified and remain to this day in the archives of a museum in Moscow.
