Luke 8:17JESUS( YAHUSHUA)
For nothing is hidden that will not be made manifest, nor is anything secret that will not be known and come to light.
TRUE HOLIDAY MEANINGS
Christian Holidays are ancient pagan feasts that were ushered in by the Roman Catholic Church during the rule of emperor Constantine. Constantine was a pagan sun-worshipper who had a "Christian experience" that wanted to unite his empire, both Christian and pagan together. He achieved this by re-writing history and re-naming pagan feasts with Christian names.
One of the purposes of this site is to expose Satan's snares, especially those that he is directing towards the saints of God—the called out ones. Satan always marks his work with evil fruit, the appearance of evil, occult symbolism, occult dates, and a myriad of ways that defy the authority of the Word of God.
"Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs or thistles?"-Matthew 7:16
The Lord Jesus Christ explained the concept of satanic marking in regard to behavior: the tree is corrupt if it bears corrupt fruit. The context of this verse fingers false prophets—Satan's workers. However, this principle also applies to the fruits of religious practices. God's people must carefully examine the practices the world and the church runs after and prove them to see if they are acceptable unto the Lord. (See Eph. 5:10)
Keeping the principle of "knowing them by their fruits" in mind, let us briefly examine Easter. I do not want to repeat the insights other believers have shared in exposing the origins of Easter. There are some good websites where this information is readily available to those who are willing to prove what is acceptable unto the Lord. Here is an excellent tract to read: The Pagan Origins of Easter.
First of all, nowhere in the Holy Bible are followers of the Lord Jesus Christ commanded or exhorted to commemorate our Lord's resurrection in special worship. It is interesting that the world revels in the celebration of the resurrection of the Son of God, even while they know not the one they are supposedly worshiping. Since they are not committing their annual "resurrection worship" to the true Lord Jesus Christ, to whom is their worship directed? Since they are not worshipping in spirit and in truth, then what kind of worship is it? It is Satanic, or devilish worship.
Satanic worship is any worship, no matter how holy it appears on the surface, that is not carried out in spirit and in truth. This kind of worship is offered by the "children of disobedience" by the spirit that now works in them which is the prince of the power of the air:
"Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience."-Eph. 2:2
Christians also offer devilish worship if they are double-minded in regard to their worship. If believers are not worshipping God in spirit and in truth, then the Bible says they are partaking of the table of devils:
"Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils."-1 Cor. 10:21
Christians differ from unbelievers in their capacity for true worship. Unbelievers, who are spiritually dead in their tresspasses and sins, do not have the ability to worship in spirit and in truth and cannot partake of the Lord's table. Followers of Jesus Christ have the ability to partake of either the Lord's table or the table of devils. They cannot partake of both at the same time. One is mutually exclusive of the other. If we look at the context of 1 Cor. 10:20-23 we can see what happens in regard to believers partaking of the "table of devils":
"But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to the devil, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils. Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?"-1 Cor. 10:20, 22
An unbelievers' worship is to the devil by default, even if his worship appears to be directed toward the Lord Jesus Christ. Since he is not born of the Holy Spirit and thus cannot worship God in spirit and in truth, his worship is at the table of devils in the sight of God whether he realizes this or not. This is a fact. It is also a fact that believers can fellowship with devils in their worship if they do not confine their worship of God to biblical standards: in spirit and in truth:
"God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth"-John. 4:24
If a Christian is worshipping who he presumes to be God, but is not worshipping in spirit and truth, he is fellowshipping with devils. The entire tenth chapter of 1 Corinthians is about believers committing idolatry and the consequences for such. Paul likened idolatry to the sin of tempting Christ! He explained that God's people must flee from idolatry:
Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry. 1 Cor. 10:14
God is pleased when his people obey him and flee from idolatry. On the other hand, the religious-but-worldly relatives of the Christian who flees from idolatry will not be pleased. Remember that persecutions for living godly in Christ Jesus will be a faint memory when we hear the words, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant."
Easter: A "Christian" Celebration Based Upon the Full Moon
Is celebrating Easter worshipping God in spirit and in truth? Well, let us look at the day that is chosen to celebrate what was and still is a fertility rite. Easter is not celebrated on a fixed date each year. The reason the date fluctuates is because the date for Easter is based upon the full moon. I learned about this several years ago by consulting my Webster's Universal Unabridged Dictionary.
Easter-[a paschal feast, originally a pagan festival in honor of the Goddess of Spring, Eastre, held in April.]
1. An annual Christian festival in commemoration of the resurrection of Jesus, held on the first Sunday after the date of the full moon that occurs on or after March 21.
2. The Sunday on which Easter is held: often called Easter Sunday.
March 21st (or 22nd) is the Vernal (Spring) Equinox and is also a Satanic high day. The date of this "Christian" celebration is held on the first Sunday after the date of the full moon that occurs on or after March 21! The way the yearly Easter date is calculated definitely marks it as a pagan holiday.
Destroy the Works of the Devil Through Prayer
Human sacrifices are performed throughout Easter holidays. These satanic ritual killings begin on "Good Friday" at 12:01 a.m. and continue through Easter Sunday. It is the will of God that we pray and ask him to intervene and rescue from death those who have been prepared for ritual murder at this time. Pray that Satan would be thwarted from receiving the sacrifices that he desires and that lives would be saved to the honor and glory of God.
Human sacrifice blasphemes God and intensely glorifies Satan. God's people must not participate in Easter in the manner of a celebration because it is Satan's holiday marked by the full moon and human sacrifice! Satan's followers covet the cooperation of demons which enable them to carry out Satan's purposes in this world. To acquire this power they must shed and consume human blood in ceremonial killings. Satan requires the execution of these atrocious practices throughout the world.
God is calling his called out ones to prevail in prayer against the gates of hell during this time. Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil. As his followers, we must follow him and do the same. We must worship in spirit and in truth during Easter week by interceding for those held in bondage. God has provided a way of escape for people slated for sacrifice in the past and he will continue to provide a way of escape if we will pray.
Some of you might say,
"Well, I'm going to go to the church play, will enjoy my Easter feast, and partake of the spiritual aspects of the resurrection celebration anyway. I have nothing to do with what Satan's workers are involved in and I reject the world's secular rituals of egg hunting and chocolate bunnies and marshmallow chicks. My celebration is a Christian one. I'm going to enjoy myself and celebrate Christ's resurrection. There's nothing wrong with that! My family has always done this; it's a tradition!"
Gary and I do understand your feelings because we celebrated Easter for many years before we realized that we were taking man's tradition and trying to put God's Spirit and truth into it. We had to let go of even treasured family holidays in order to put the Lord Jesus Christ first.
Jesus rebuked the Pharisees for elevating tradition over God's Word:
"Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?" Matt. 15:3
Those who celebrate Easter transgress the commandments of God because The Bible does not direct believers to celebrate the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ nor does God's word condone paganism in Christian garb. We are commanded to remember Jesus' death via the Lord's Supper, not his resurrection.
Let us look at the verse that Christians like to use as an excuse to partake of the table of devils by observing the holidays the world runs after:
"Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ." Col. 2:16, 17
"Ah hah! See? Nobody may judge a Christian in respect to a holy day!" Perhaps some who name the name of Jesus Christ are not aware that Easter (Ishtar) is not really a holy day unto the Lord Jesus Christ. Rather, it is Satan's holy day. It is probable that many Christians do not know that Easter is a time of human sacrifice. But you and I know, and Jesus taught that we will be held accountable for what we know:
"But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more." Luke 12:48
You may protest,
"But I have nothing to do with human sacrifice! It is not my fault that Satanists do such vile things on Easter Sunday! Easter has an entirely different meaning to me. Easter is a holy time to me; I worship the Lord Jesus Christ and honor him only on this day!"
Please soberly ponder these words. Do you believe the Lord Jesus Christ is receiving your worship when he has indicated nowhere in the Holy Bible that this kind of worship is acceptable to him? God's ways are not our ways. The Lord Jesus Christ is not pleased with those who call themselves by his name and yet insist on observing a pagan holiday that is based on the full moon. Jesus is not honored while He watches the worldwide, simultaneous sacrifices of thousands upon thousands of people while his church does nothing to counter these atrocities!
Jesus Christ is calling his true worshippers to bear his burden and intercede to bring about the rescue and escape of men and women, boys, girls, and infants who are being prepared for ritual slayings on Easter and other satanic high days. Jesus came to destroy the works of darkness. It is his will that his people co-labor with him with him and do the same by praying against human sacrifice while the world engages in the Easter celebration.
But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. John 4:23, 24
The True Meaning Of Christ-Mass
They tell us that it is the season to be jolly. It is a time of ornaments, red and green decorations, silver bells, holly, mistletoe and colored lights. It is also a time of department store Santas calling out their universal mantra, "Ho ho ho, Merry Christmas." Nearly all of the realm of so-called "Christianity" join in and repeat this same greeting, "Merry Christmas!"
Although we hear these words constantly as they resonate millions of times throughout the land, almost nobody understands what they are really saying. It is the purpose of this tract to take the words, "Merry Christmas" and examine the true meaning and essence of those words.
A true Christian would want to examine everything they say, because Jesus said in Matthew 12:36-37, "But I say unto you, that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgement. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned." We will now set aside all of the customs, glitter and traditions of Christmas, which were taken from pagan witchcraft and popularized by the Roman Catholic Church, and we will focus on the true meaning of the words, "Merry Christmas!"
The word "Merry" is simple to define. It unquestionably means to be happy, joyful and light-hearted. The word "merry" fits into the ambience of laughter and frivolity. This word "merry" by itself is innocent and innocuous enough, but as we will now see, it becomes heinously blasphemous when used with the word "Christmas."
Here let it be noted that most people think that the word, "Christmas" means "the birth of Christ." By definition, it means "death of Christ", and I will prove it by using the World Book Encyclopedia, the Catholic Encyclopedia, and a book entitled, The Mass In Slow Motion.
If you are an honest, sincere and discerning Christian, please read on; if not, you might as well stop right here. The World Book Encyclopedia defines "Christmas" as follows: "The word Christmas comes from "Cristes Maesse", an early English phrase that means "Mass of Christ." (1) It is interesting to note that the word "Mass", as used by the Roman Catholics, has traditionally been rejected by the so-called Protestants, such as Lutherans, Baptists, Methodists, Presbyterians, Pentecostals and so on. The word "Mass" is strictly a Catholic word and thus, so is "Christ-Mass."
It would stand to reason, that since all of these denominations love and embrace "Christ-Mass", that December 25th is the great homecoming day, when all of the Protestants become Catholic for a day. It would seem that all of the so-called "wayward daughters" of the Romish church return to their mother, the scarlet harlot. Thus, all of the so-called Protestant churches could sing to the Pope that popular song "I'll be home for Christmas."
As previously stated, the word "Mass" in religious usage means a "death sacrifice." The impact of this fact is horrifying and shocking; for when the millions of people are saying, "Merry Christmas", they are literally saying "Merry death of Christ!" Furthermore, when the fat man in the red suit laughs boisterously and says, "Ho ho ho, Merry Christmas", he is mocking and laughing at the suffering and bleeding Saviour, who died for our sins. He does this while parents place their little children into his waiting arms to hear his false promises of gifts that he says he will give them. Consider what you are saying when you say "Merry Christmas."
What is so amusing about our Saviour's painful death? What is so funny? Why is Santa laughing? Why are you going along with it? Your words do count and Satan knows it. Yes, the word "Mass" does mean "death sacrifice", and to cement that fact, we will consider the definition of the inventors of the religious application of the word "Mass." I am looking at page 537 of the Catholic Encyclopedia, which says, "In the Christian law, the supreme sacrifice is that of the Mass." It goes on to say, "The supreme act of worship consists essentially in an offering of a worthy victim to God, the offering made by a proper person, as a priest, the destruction of the victim." (2) Please note carefully the word, "victim" of the Mass. The Latin word for victim is "Hostia" from which the word "host" is derived. The Mass, by definition of those who coined the word, is a sacrifice involving a victim. There is no other meaning for the word "Mass" or "Christ-Mass." On page 110 of a book entitled "The Mass In Slow Motion", we find the following words: "It is only with the consecration that the sacrifice of the Mass is achieved. I have represented the Mass to you, more than once, as a kind of ritual dance." (3)
In essence, the Mass is the ceremonial slaying of Jesus Christ over and over again, followed by the eating of his flesh and the drinking of his blood. The Mass is the death sacrifice, and the "Host" is the victim. This is official Roman Catholic doctrine, and "Christmas" is a word that they invented. Again, I ask, what is so merry about the pain, bleeding, suffering and death of Jesus Christ? Satan has done quite a job of getting millions of so-called "Christians" to blaspheme. What a deceiver he is.
Now you know the true meaning of the word "Christmas" or Mass of Christ. There is much more to know about this pagan holiday, and we will be glad to provide you with plenty of evidence that Jesus was not born on December 25th, and that Christmas is not only a lie, but is actually a witches' sabbat called "Yule" in clever disguise. A History of New Years
In 46 B.C.E. the Roman emperor Julius Caesar first established January 1 as New Year’s day. Janus was the Roman god of doors and gates, and had two faces, one looking forward and one back. Caesar felt that the month named after this god (“January”) would be the appropriate “door” to the year. Caesar celebrated the first January 1 New Year by ordering the violent routing of revolutionary Jewish forces in the Galilee. Eyewitnesses say blood flowed in the streets. In later years, Roman pagans observed the New Year by engaging in drunken orgies—a ritual they believed constituted a personal re-enacting of the chaotic world that existed before the cosmos was ordered by the gods.
As Christianity spread, pagan holidays were either incorporated into the Christian calendar or abandoned altogether. By the early medieval period most of Christian Europe regarded Annunciation Day (March 25) as the beginning of the year. (According to Catholic tradition, Annunciation Day commemorates the angel Gabriel’s announcement to Mary that she would be impregnated by G-d and conceive a son to be called Jesus.)
After William the Conqueror (AKA “William the Bastard” and “William of Normandy”) became King of England on December 25, 1066, he decreed that the English return to the date established by the Roman pagans, January 1. This move ensured that the commemoration of Jesus’ birthday (December 25) would align with William’s coronation, and the commemoration of Jesus’ circumcision (January 1) would start the new year - thus rooting the English and Christian calendars and his own Coronation). William’s innovation was eventually rejected, and England rejoined the rest of the Christian world and returned to celebrating New Years Day on March 25.
About five hundred years later, in 1582, Pope Gregory XIII (AKA “Ugo Boncompagni”, 1502-1585) abandoned the traditional Julian calendar. By the Julian reckoning, the solar year comprised 365.25 days, and the intercalation of a “leap day” every four years was intended to maintain correspondence between the calendar and the seasons. Really, however there was a slight inaccuracy in the Julian measurement (the solar year is actually 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes and 46 seconds = 365.2422 days). This slight inaccuracy caused the Julian calendar to slip behind the seasons about one day per century. Although this regression had amounted to 14 days by Pope Gregory’s time, he based his reform on restoration of the vernal equinox, then falling on March 11, to the date had 1,257 years earlier when Council of Nicaea was convened (March 21, 325 C.E.). Pope Gregory made the correction by advancing the calendar 10 days. The change was made the day after October 4, 1582, and that following day was established as October 15, 1582. The Gregorian calendar differs from the Julian in three ways: (1) No century year is a leap year unless it is exactly divisible by 400 (e.g., 1600, 2000, etc.); (2) Years divisible by 4000 are common (not leap) years; and (3) once again the New Year would begin with the date set by the early pagans, the first day of the month of Janus - January 1.
On New Years Day 1577 Pope Gregory XIII decreed that all Roman Jews, under pain of death, must listen attentively to the compulsory Catholic conversion sermon given in Roman synagogues after Friday night services. On New Years Day 1578 Gregory signed into law a tax forcing Jews to pay for the support of a “House of Conversion” to convert Jews to Christianity. On New Years 1581 Gregory ordered his troops to confiscate all sacred literature from the Roman Jewish community. Thousands of Jews were murdered in the campaign.
Throughout the medieval and post-medieval periods, January 1 - supposedly the day on which Jesus’ circumcision initiated the reign of Christianity and the death of Judaism - was reserved for anti-Jewish activities: synagogue and book burnings, public tortures, and simple murder.
The Israeli term for New Year’s night celebrations, “Sylvester,” was the name of the “Saint” and Roman Pope who reigned during the Council of Nicaea (325 C.E.). The year before the Council of Nicaea convened, Sylvester convinced Constantine to prohibit Jews from living in Jerusalem. At the Council of Nicaea, Sylvester arranged for the passage of a host of viciously anti-Semitic legislation. All Catholic “Saints” are awarded a day on which Christians celebrate and pay tribute to that Saint’s memory. December 31 is Saint Sylvester Day - hence celebrations on the night of December 31 are dedicated to Sylvester’s memory.
U.S. News and World Report December 23, 1996
I also heard that New Years should be in the spring cause that is when everything regrows and mates. So the elites make it in the dead of winter when everything is dead! They are obsessed with death!
Early believers kept Saturday as the Sabbath until March 7, 321 CE when Pope Constantine passed a law requiring believers to worship on Sunday, the day the pagans worshipped the sun-god. Believers still kept Saturday as the Sabbath until another law was passed eleven years later. This law signed into decree by Pope Constantine forbid believers to worship on the Sabbath (Saturday) and it was punishable by death by the Catholic Church. Many believers were burned to death by the Catholic Church for keeping the Sabbath.
WORSHIP GOD EVERYDAY!!
THE BIG ONE-- Many of you will be paying for it in cash most of the year. The stores complained that business was down, but still in the Billions. Did you know that Christmas wasn't practiced as we know it until about the year 300. "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge."
Christmas was celebrated by pagan sun-worshippers for thousands of years before the Messiah was even born. It all started during the building of the tower of Babel. Nimrod supervised the operation and was called the sun-god and worshipped as such. To end this worship, Nimrod's uncle Shem, Noah's eldest son, killed Nimrod and cut his body into small pieces then scattered his body parts across the land.
Ishtar or Easter, also known by her biblical name Semiramis was the widow of Nimrod. She was called the "Queen of heaven" and claimed to have been impregnated by Nimrod through the rays of the sun and later had a son by the name of Tammuz who had a miraculous birth on December 25th. Pagans believed that Nimrod was reincarnated as Tammuz and so Easter married her son Tammuz. Pagan sun-worshippers celebrated the birthday of the reincarnate sun-god on December 25th. Scripture is very clear that we are not to celebrate this particular holiday.
The children gather wood, and the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead the dough, to make cakes to the Queen of Heaven, and to pour out drink offerings to other deities, that they may provoke Me to anger. (HIM Jeremiah 7:18)
The passage above is obviously referring to making Christmas cookies and leaving those cookies and a glass of milk for Nimrod's widow Easter who was called the queen of heaven. The only difference is now those offerings are left for Santa (Satan) himself. Let's move on and read another passage from Scripture.
Thus says YaHuWaH, "Do not learn the way of the gentiles, and do not be dismayed at the signs of the heaven; for the gentiles are dismayed at them. For the customs of the peoples are vanity; for one cuts a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman with the axe. They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it not move. (HIM Jeremiah 10:2-4)
This passage is obviously referring to cutting down the Christmas tree, putting it on some sort of tree stand, and decorating it. Once you learn why it had become customary to use an erect evergreen tree that has a pointed end decorate it with big red balls you will realize the extent of the perversion in this holiday. The erect tree symbolizes Nimrod's erect masculinity. The tree was evergreen because evergreen trees are full of life year round, like Nimrod's penis. The tree was pointed at the end just like Nimrod's pecker. The big red balls that dangle off the tree, well you get the picture. This holiday is perversion at its best.
Every sun-god was born on December 25th. Amun-Ra, Horus, Mithra, Tammuz, and Zeus were born on December 25th. If there was one day that the Messiah was not born, it was December 25th. In fact the Scripture is quite clear that Messiah was born late September or early October on the first day of the Feast of Tabernacles.
ST. PATRICK'S DAY
St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland. Patron saint: a saint that is supposed to protect and promote the welfare of a particular person, community, state or institution. Jehovah-Jarieh, the Lord will provide (Gen. 22:14). Casting the whole of your care upon Him (I Peter 5:7). Don't worry, God knows what you need even before you ask (Luke 12:22-31. So, St. Patrick is an idol you are depending on. We are told not to try to communicate with the dead - necromancy (Deut. 18:11).
The forty days abstinence of Lent was directly borrowed from worshipers of the Babylonian goddess, Ishtar or Eastre. Such a fast is still observed in the spring of the year by pagan Devil worshipers of Koordistan. Pagan Mexicans, three days after the vernal equinox, begin a solemn fast of forty days in honor of the sun. In 519 A.D. the council held at Aurelia in the time of Hormisdas, Bishop of Rome, decreed that Lent should be kept before Easter. Three days after the vernal equinox began, a solemn fast of forty days was held in honor of the sun. The sun god has many names: Adonis, Asiris, Bacchus, Liber and Tammuz. Lent was brought into the church to keep the pagans from leaving it. The church said the fast was for Christ's crucifixion. In reality it has been in effect before Christ was born in the heathen spring festivals. Ash Wednesday is celebrated on the first day of Lent.
It was originally to commemorate Christ's triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Later on it was combined with pagan activities; today the palm and willow are blessed and carried in the procession. It is ascribed to a pagan holiday where olive and willow are blessed. Powers attributed to the palm are exorcising evil spirits, healing diseases, warding off devils, protecting homes from lightning and fire, and protecting fields against hail and storms. The olive has had healing powers attributed to it since antiquity.
Did you think Thanksgiving day was started by the Pilgrims in 1621? Nope! According to a Public Broadcast program I saw, the Indians taught the Pilgrims that this special Indian day was to give thanks to their "god". You may need some DELIVERANCE in this area. .
MOTHER'S & FATHER'S DAY
Mother's Day dates back to ancient cultures in Greece and Rome. In both cultures, mother goddesses (Queen of Heaven). were worshipped during the springtime with religious festivals. The ancient Greeks paid tribute to the powerful goddess Rhea, the wife of Cronus, known as the Mother of the Gods (Queen of Heaven). Similarly, evidence of a three-day Roman festival in Mid-March called Hilaria, to honor the Roman goddess Magna Mater, or Great Mother, dates back to 250 BCE.
As Christianity spread throughout Europe, the celebration of the "Mother Church" replaced the pagan tradition of honoring mythological goddesses. The fourth Sunday in Lent (Weeping for Tammuz), a 40-day fasting period before Easter, became known as Mothering Sunday. To show appreciation for their mothers, they often brought gifts or a "mothering cake" (Jeremiah 7:18) and over time, it began to coincide with the celebration of the Mother Church. Mother's Day always falls on the second Sun-day of May, and like so many other holidays rooted in pagan sun-worship including Father's Day which always falls on the third Sun-day of June, usually fall on the day named in honor of their most powerful god -- The Sun!
Pagans in Rome celebrated the evening of February 14th and February 15th and as an idolatrous festival in honor of Lupercus "the hunter of wolves". It was not until the reign of Pope Gelasius that the holiday became a "Christian" custom. "As far back as 496, Pope Gelasius changed Lupercalia on February 15th to St. Valentine's Day on February 14th." The original Saint Valentine was Nimrod, on this day in February, Semiramis, the mother of Nimrod, was said to have been purified and to have appeared for the first time in public with her son as the original "mother and child."
Valentine's Day: Religious Origins and Background
At first, the connection between Valentine’s Day and religion might seem obvious — isn’t the day named after a Christian saint? When we consider the matter more closely, we find that there isn’t a strong relationship between Christian saints and romance. We should then realize that our initial ideas may have been too hasty. To gain a better understanding of the religious background of Valentine’s Day, we have to dig deeper.
There is a lot of debate and disagreement among scholars about the origins of Valentine’s Day. We’ll probably never be able to disentangle all of the cultural and religious threads in order to reconstruct a complete and coherent story. The origins of Valentine’s Day lie too far in the past to be sure about everything. Despite this, there are a number of speculations we can make which are reasonably sound.
For one thing, we know that the Romans celebrated a holiday on February 14th to honor Juno Fructifier, Queen of the Roman gods and goddesses, and that on February 15th they celebrated the Feast of Lupercalia in honor of Lupercus, the Roman god who watched over shepherds and their flocks. Neither of these appear to have much to do with love or romance, but there were a number of customs focused on fertility which were associated with one feast or the other. Although attributions vary depending on the source, they are consistent in their description of the rituals.
In one, men would go to a grotto dedicated to Lupercal, the wolf god, which was located at the foot of Palatine Hill. It was here the Romans believed that the founders of Rome, Romulus and Remus, were suckled by a she-wolf. It was also here that the men would sacrifice a goat, don its skin, and then proceed to run around, hitting women with small whips. These actions were taken in imitation of the god Pan and supposedly a women struck in this way would be guaranteed fertility during the next year.
In another ritual, women would submit their names to a common box and men would each draw one out. These two would be a couple for the duration of the festival (and at times for the entire following year). Both rituals were designed to promote not only fertility, but also life generally.
Our modern festival isn’t called St. Lupercus’ Day, it’s called St. Valentine’s Day after a Christian saint — so where does Christianity come into play? That’s more difficult for historians to decipher. There was more than one person with the name Valentinius who existed during the early years of the church, two or three of whom were martyred.
According to one story, Roman emperor Claudius II imposed a ban on marriages because too many young men were dodging the draft by getting married (only single men had to enter the army). A Christian priest named Valentinus ignored the ban and performed secret marriages. He was caught, of course, which meant that he was imprisoned and sentenced to death. While awaiting execution, young lovers visited him with notes about how much better love is than war — the first “valentines.”
As you might have already guessed, the execution occurred in 269 CE on Februrary 14th, the Roman day dedicated to celebrating love and fertility. After a couple of centuries (in 469, to be precise), Emperor Gelasius declared it a holy day in honor of Valentinus instead of the pagan god Lupercus. This allowed Christianity to take over some of the celebrations of love and fertility which had perviously occurred in the context of paganism.
Another Valentinus was a priest jailed for helping Christians. During his stay he fell in love with the jailer’s daughter and sent her notes signed “from your Valentine.” He was eventually beheaded and buried on the Via Flaminia. Reportedly Pope Julius I built a basilica over his grave. A third and final Valentinius was the bishop of Terni and he was also martyred, with his relics being taken back to Terni.
The pagan celebrations were reworked to fit the martyr theme — after all, early and medieval Christianity did not approve of rituals that encouraged sexuality. Instead of pulling girls’ names from boxes, it is believed that both boys and girls chose the names of martyred saints from a box. It wasn’t until the 14th century that customs returned to celebrations of love and life rather than faith and death.
It was around this time — the Renaissance — that people began to break free of some of the bonds imposed upon them by the Church and move towards a humanistic view of nature, society, and the individual. As a part of this change there was also a move towards more sensual art and literature. There was no shortage of poets and authors who connected the dawning of Spring with love, sexuality, and procreation. A return to more pagan-like celebrations of February 14th is not surprising.
As with so many other holidays that have pagan roots, divination came to play an important role in the development of modern Valentine’s Day. People looked to all sorts of things, primarily in nature, in order to find some sign about who might become their mate for life — their One True Love. There were also, of course, all sorts of things which came to be used to induce love or lust. They existed before, naturally, but as love and sexuality came once again to be more closely associated with February 14th, these foods and drinks came to be associated with it as well.
Today, capitalist commercialism is one of the biggest aspects of Valentine’s Day. Hundreds of millions of dollars are spent on chocolate, candies, flowers, dinners, hotel rooms, jewelry, and all sorts of other gifts and whatnot used to celebrate February 14th. There is a lot of money to be made from people’s desire to commemorate the date, and even more to be made in convincing people to employ any number of new means to celebrate. Only Christmas and Halloween come close in the way that modern commercialism has transformed and adopted an ancient pagan celebration.
All Saints' Day was followed by All-Souls' Day, November 2, unless that was a Sunday then it was November 3, this was another Catholic adaptation of pagan festivals for the dead. Prayers for the dead are an integral part of the traditional All Saint's Day services, which are scheduled in Catholic churches on November 1, and on the next Sunday. Halloween gets its name from the Catholic holiday, it is a Hallowed evening, because it precedes All Hallows' Day, thus: Hallow'en. Halloween is a pagan holiday to honor the dead and evil spirits. We are warned not to take part in customs and traditions like this in the Scripture.
take heed to yourself that you not be ensnared to follow them, after that they are destroyed from before you; and that you not inquire after their deities, saying, "How do these nations serve their dieties? I will do likewise." You shall not do so to YaHuWaH your Elohim: for every abomination to the YaHuWaH, which he hates, have they done to their deities; for even their sons and their daughters do they burn in the fire to their deities. (HIM Deuteronomy 12:30-31)
Halloween is a perfect example of what this passage is referring about. Pagans served their gods by honoring the evil spirits on Halloween. They did this by dressing up like the evil spirits and giving offerings to the evil spirits. This is why candy is given out on Halloween, as offerings for the evil spirits. The phrase trick or treat was attributed to this practice because pagans believed the evil spirits would do something bad (trick) to them if they did not leave an offering (treat) for them. I would rather honor the Most High.
